The duchess is an english historic film starring Keira Knightley and Ralph Fiennes,  directed by Saul Dibb.
The action takes place at the end of the XVIII century in England.

Georgiana Spencer, the main character is, at the beginning, a young lady who married at the age of 17, the duke of Devonshire. An old and influent man who doesn't seem to be attracted by hs new young wife. He never talks with her and the only thing he wants is having a male heir.
By the way, lady Georgiana is adored by the public and she is really interested in politic. She meets during a trip in Baths Lady Elizabeth Foster and then, she makes her her new best friend and she accomodates her at her home in London.
She doesn't know yet that she is making a mistake because, she will learn that her husband is unfaithful and have sex with Elizabeth.
After that, she  falls passionately in love with the young politician Charles Grey and she became pregnant of him.
Her husband becomes mad when he knows his wife 's love affair and he forces her to choose between her children or her lover... Then she have to choose her family and she would never see Charles again...

I've just watched this film tonight, and I really appreciate it. The performance of Keira Knightley was really credible and I'm going on thinking that she has a real talent to play this sort of roles.  I saw her in Pride and Prejudice and she wears particularly well victorian dresses !
I found really interesting the engagement of Georgiana in politic, it was so rare I think for a woman to be implicated with politician in this century...
Moreover, I like her point of view on freedom, I wil just quote a really true sentence, the first she say in the film

The story made me think to Sofia Coppola's film Marie-Antoinette... But I prefer The duchess, richer in meanings...
